Last Sunday, Fremantle Surf Club joined the community to mark the 84th anniversary of the loss of HMAS Sydney II, the Royal Australian Navy cruiser tragically sunk off the Western Australian coast on 19 November 1941, with all 645 crew members lost. The solemn occasion provided an opportunity to honour the bravery, dedication, and service of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony was attended by Fremantle Surf Club members and community members, as well as distinguished guests including Heidi Gan, SLSWA President; Lisa O’Malley, MLA Bicton; Sandra Brewer, MLA Cottesloe; and Alex Bajada, all witnessing this commemorative moment.
Representatives of the Royal Australian Navy also joined the ceremony, including Lieutenant Commander Chris Bobridge, representing HMAS Stirling, and Commander Daniel Booth, Royal Australian Navy / Submarine Force, alongside crew members from HMAS Sydney II and IV.
Adding to the ceremony’s moving atmosphere, the 51 ACU Swan Regiment Drums and Pipes provided a stirring accompaniment as they marched alongside the nippers and youth, who carried wreaths in remembrance. Their presence providing a moving tribute to the proceedings.
In a departure from the traditional Tube Races, the Club’s rowers took to the water to perform a solemn salute with their oars, creating a powerful and visually striking tribute to the sailors lost that day.
The Fremantle Surf Club extends its heartfelt thanks to all who participated, helping to make this commemoration a meaningful and memorable occasion for the community.
