SLSA Youth Open Championship Highlights

What a weekend for our club at the State Titles! Our athletes put in incredible performances, showcasing skill, determination, and sportsmanship. Fremantle was represented by 50 competitors across Youth and Open divisions in water events and Surf Boat races. We came away with two medals, including one gold in the Surf Boat Relay and one silver in the U19 Surf Boat, along with several personal bests across the competition.

Water Events

The water events were hosted at City Beach this year as part of the City’s 100-year celebration. We had 20 athletes battling through challenging short dumper waves, making it to several finals across Board Race, Surf Race, Ironman, and Cameron Relay.

A special shoutout to Thomas Dreverman , Samson Connolly, Hayden Ferguson, and Eben Prinsloo, who have been competing for the club since their nipper days. This year, they stepped up to the Open category, finishing 4th in the Open Male 4-Person Surf Race Relay. Thomas also made it to the Surf Race Open Final, finishing in 4th place.

In the Youth division, Finn McDonald, Stirling Moore, Graysen Mottershead, Pieter Prinsloo, and Benjamin Somers put in a fantastic effort, reaching the 4-Person Cameron Relay Final. In a close race with Sorrento, they finished 4th place overall.

Surf Boat

Scarborough Beach was once again the venue for the Surf Boat State Championship, and the pressure was on to retain our crown in the Surf Boat Relay—a title we claimed last year, ending North Cott’s 10-year winning streak.

It wasn’t an easy day for rowing, with challenging conditions throughout. We had seven crews—male and female—representing the club across the U19, Reserve, and Open divisions.

Despite the conditions, the highlight of the day was the Surf Boat Relay, where the Fremantle Team—comprising Freo Burritos, Freo Fires, and Freo Sons—won the gold medal for the second year in a row, successfully defending the title! The U19 Boys also had a strong performance, finishing the day with a silver medal in their division.
